Elf Owls Reception

Welcome to Term 5!

Are Minibeasts like me?

Monday 21st April 2025

Dear Elf Owl Families,

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break! We have an exciting term ahead planned. Our new topic is Are Minibeasts like me? This topic is perfect to start the summer term as we will be asking questions such as 'what is an insect/ minibeast?' and going on minibeast hunts around our school grounds. We will focus on the lifecycle of a butterfly, frog and spider, including watching caterpillars evolve and reading some great stories, such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Yucky Worms and What the Ladybird Heard. In our R.E lessons we will be asking What is the Church and who goes there? Whilst in PSHE we will be thinking about Being My Best and how we can keep our mind and bodies healthy.

Monster Phonics

This term we will recall the graphemes (letters and sounds) we have taught this year and practise reading and spelling CCVC & CCVC words. We will also practise reading and writing sentences.

Reading

Please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes each day. Encourage them to use their phonics to decode words where possible and spend time talking about the story. Please sign your child's yellow reading records so we know you have read together.

Maths

In Maths this term we will be counting, ordering, reading and writing numbers beyond 10- this will include a big focus on the 'teens' numbers and understanding the value of the digits (we will extend to higher numbers where children are ready). Next, we will be working on adding and subtracting, including recording in an equation using the correct mathematical symbols. Finally we will continue to explore properties of shape and spatial relations.

P.E and Forest School

The children will have P.E on Mondays and Thursdays with Matt Pearce this term. The focus will be 'Speed Agility Travel'. The children should come to school wearing full kit and trainers/ plimsolls. We will continue with Forest School on Fridays. Please ensure your child has full waterproofs, wellies and a change of clothes left in school. These items are also used throughout the week when the children play outside. Please see the link below for more information about Forest School.
